Hurstville Bushcare Volunteer Program Hurstville City Council is responsible for the management of 79 hectares of remnant bushland. Council’s Volunteer Bushcare Program was introduced in April 1999, due to increasing community interest in actively participating in the regeneration and preservation of bushland sites in the area. There are currently around 60 active volunteers that make up 21 groups working at 14 sites across Oatley, Peakhurst, Lugarno and Riverwood, including a Native Nursery group. The groups meet Tuesday to Saturday of each week. They operate as 3 hour sessions held either in the morning or afternoon on a weekly, fortnightly, monthly or bimonthly basis.
